External tools in Power BI Desktop. External tools have expanded the capabilities of Power BI immensely, as they integrate with the reporting features and data modeling. You simply install and/or register the applications, and then you’ll see them on the External Tools ribbon, where you can access them easily. If these tools are new to you, you’ll be guided on how to work your way through some of the available tools and use them for an efficient and seamless experience.

With External tools, 3rd party tooling integration is now possible. Tools such as ALM Toolkit, DAX Studio and Tabular Editor integrate nicely with Power BI Desktop and are capable of writing data in your Power BI model.

External Tools capabilities are open source, so everyone can create his own tools to integrate with Power BI.
